TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Police arrested 18 demonstrators accused of being linked to an anarchist group during a protest in front of the MPR/DPR/DPD Building, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday, August 25, 2025.

Central Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro said the arrests were made in two waves. Eleven people were detained around 10:00 AM WIB (Western Indonesia TIme) and another seven around 12:30 PM WIB.

All detainees are men, with backgrounds ranging from unemployed workers and mechanics to students and online motorcycle taxi drivers.

“Seven members of the anarchist group were secured in the afternoon,” Susatyo said in a written statement.

By late morning, 15 detainees had been transferred to Jakarta Police Headquarters. Four of them were students arrested at 10:00 AM WIB, while another four were detained around 11:26 AM WIB.

The protest escalated when police fired tear gas at 01:10 PM WIB to disperse the growing crowd. Demonstrators fled towards Jalan Gerbang Pemuda and crossed the Jakarta Inner Ring Road. In the chaos, several young protesters were trampled while trying to escape the smoke.

To secure the rally, the National Police, Indonesian Military (TNI), and Jakarta Provincial Government deployed 1,250 joint personnel. Susatyo stressed that officers did not use firearms.

“We are ensuring the protest proceeds safely and does not disrupt the public. Security measures are meant to guarantee that aspirations can be expressed in an orderly way,” he said.

The demonstration was organized under the banner “Indonesian People’s Revolution” and had been promoted through WhatsApp chains and social media.

Protesters demanded investigations into alleged corruption involving former president Joko Widodo’s family, the impeachment of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, as well as action on rising taxes, state debt issues, and disparities in welfare between lawmakers and citizens.
