Zohran Mamdani Could Win New York Democratic Mayoral Primary

1 week ago 15

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Zohran Mamdani, potentially the first Muslim mayor of New York, after winning the Democratic primary election in the city on Tuesday night, as reported by CBS News and Politico.

The 33-year-old man of Bangladeshi descent garnered 43.5 percent of the vote from 91 percent. Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, a strong favorite until a few weeks ago, received 36.4 percent of the vote and acknowledged his defeat on Tuesday night.

Speaking at a campaign rally, Cuomo praised Mamdani, saying he had run a "very smart, good, and impactful campaign."

"Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won," Cuomo said.

Mamdani's astonishing rise serves as a rebuke to centrist Democrats and offers hope to other progressive factions hoping to advance in nationwide general elections.

Cuomo was backed by deep-pocketed donors, including pro-Zionists, and supported by some centrist figures, including Bill Clinton. However, Mamdani benefited from a grassroots wave of support among young people, particularly with a campaign promising for the people of New York City, rather than Israel, as Cuomo's camp emphasized.

Meanwhile, Brad Lander, a progressive New York City comptroller, stood in third place with 11.4 percent. Lander, a man of Jewish descent, appeared with Mamdani on a TV show just before the vote, which boosted the Muslim candidate's votes. This is because, during the show, Lander expressed support for Mamdani in response to the presenter's "racist questions."

New York City uses a ranked-choice voting system, and since no candidate is likely to reach 50 percent, the election council will count the people's second-choice candidates.

Mamdani, who supported Lander the previous week, is predicted to gain more from that count than Cuomo.

By supporting each other, Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander are using ranked-choice voting as a tool to challenge Andrew Cuomo. On Tuesday, Mamdani and Lander campaigned together, urging voters not to include Cuomo on the ballot.

Lander said the primary goal is to gather our votes to block Andrew Cuomo.

Lander also began using robocalls by Attorney General Letitia James and Jewish activist Ruth Messinger to urge voters not to include Cuomo on their ballots.

"So, when you vote today, please rank the five mayoral candidates. However, do not include Andrew Cuomo in any of them," one of the calls said.

Cuomo told the New York Times that he may still run in the New York mayoral election in November as an independent candidate. "I want to analyze and talk to some colleagues," he said.

However, considering most New Yorkers are Democratic voters and that incumbent Eric Adams is unpopular, Mamdani would be the favorite to become New York's 11th mayor.
