TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 15,600 Palestinians in Gaza, including 3,800 children, require medical evacuation for urgent, specialized treatment, announced Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on Saturday.
In a statement on the social media platform X, as reported by WAFA, Tedros highlighted the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
He emphasized that tens of thousands of patients in the Palestinian enclave still lack access to the medical care they desperately need.
He reiterated the urgent need for humanitarian aid to enter the territory, which remains under an Israeli blockade, and called for a ceasefire to prevent further loss of life.
Separately, Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), urged Israel to stop denying the famine it has created in Gaza.
In a post on X, as reported by Anadolu, he stressed that "all of those who have influence must use it with determination and a sense of moral duty. Every hour counts."
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a global famine monitor supported by the UN, confirmed on Friday that famine has already occurred in the Gaza Governorate. The IPC projects that famine will spread to the central and southern regions of the enclave by the end of September.
Since October 2023, Israel has killed more than 62,300 Palestinians and devastated the enclave, leading to deaths from famine, forced migration, and the spread of disease.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Additionally, Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its actions in the enclave.
