TEMPO.CO, JakartaEaster Sunday, one of Christians’ most special holidays, celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. According to Britannica, the day serves as a joyful end to the Lenten season of fasting and penitence for many Christian churches.

Historically, the determination of when Easter should be observed was the subject of a long-standing debate. Known as the Paschal controversies, this disagreement led to Christians around the world celebrating Easter on different dates.

But after Christians in the West began marking Easter on the first day of the week—Sunday—many other churches gradually adopted the same practice.

When Is Easter 2025?

Easter is held on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox—also known as the ecclesiastical equinox, which is on March 21. As a result, Easter typically falls on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

When talking about when Easter 2025 is observed, the date might surprise many, as it falls later than in the past five years—on April 20. However, it’s still not the latest it could be, as Easter can fall as late as April 25.

Why Is Easter 2025 So Late?

The date of Easter changes every year, driven by both the spring equinox and the lunar cycles. In 2025, Easter falls just five days before the latest possible date—landing on April 20—which has sparked curiosity about why it comes so late.

In 2025, the “ecclesiastical” full moon (Paschal Full Moon) falls on Saturday, April 12. But in some parts of Europe, including the Vatican, the full moon peaks just after midnight—technically, Sunday, April 13.

Because the full moon is “considered” to fall on Sunday, then April 13 cannot be used to celebrate Easter. Therefore, Easter is pushed back to the following Sunday, which is April 20, 2025.

As intriguing as the question of when Easter falls in 2025, how three Southeast Asian countries celebrate Easter is equally worth exploring.
