TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vietnam U-23 head coach Kim Sang-sik expressed confidence that his team can defeat Indonesia in the final of the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup, which will be held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
He said his players have shown steady improvement throughout the tournament and are well-prepared for the match.
“For tomorrow’s game, there are no specific concerns. The players are improving, and we’ve prepared thoroughly. That’s why we believe we can win against Indonesia,” Kim said during a pre-match press conference at Gelora Bung Karno on Monday, July 28, 2025.
Kim also pointed out Indonesia’s physical condition after playing a demanding semifinal against Thailand, which ended in a 7-6 penalty shootout.
In contrast, Vietnam secured a 2-1 win over the Philippines in regulation time, which gave them a physical advantage.
He hopes this advantage can help Vietnam secure victory. “We believe the match result will be different. Indonesia played 120 minutes against Thailand. These are young players and they’ve had three days to recover. We are prepared and have analyzed Indonesia’s game. We’ll see how things go tomorrow,” said the South Korean coach.
In the knockout stage, Vietnam advanced from Group B, which had only three teams. After qualifying for the semifinals, they faced the Philippines and had more rest days than their opponent. This led to speculation that Vietnam had an easier route to the final. Kim disagreed with that view.
“We also had to fight to reach the final, just like Indonesia. Tomorrow, many fans will be cheering for Indonesia,” he said.
He added that his players have been prepared to handle the pressure of playing in front of a home crowd.
“I think both teams have had the same rest period, although the match durations were different. All teams are tired. It will be a tough game, and we just need to fight,” Kim explained.
