TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States welcomes Peru's move to join the "Shield of the Americas" coalition on Tuesday, September 8.
In a statement, Rubio said the U.S. is aligning efforts to secure our hemisphere against transnational and regional threats by welcoming Peru—now a Major Non-NATO Ally—into the “Shield of the Americas.”
According to ANTARA, Keiko Fujimori, the Peruvian president who took office in July, supports the move to join the initiative.
In addition to the U.S., the "Shield of the Americas" initiative includes Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The "Shield of the Americas" initiative was established in March 2026 during a summit of leaders from nations in the Western Hemisphere. Its objective was to combat drug cartels in the Western Hemisphere and curb the illegal drug trade.
