TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States will permanently require visa deposits of up to US$20,000 (around Rp360 million) for citizens from 50 nations, according to a U.S. State Department notice.
In August 2025, the U.S. launched a trial program mandating visa bonds ranging from US$5,000 (around Rp90 million) to US$15,000 (around Rp270 million) per applicant as financial assurance for their departure from American soil.
That initial initiative encompassed 50 countries, including 30 African nations.
"This rule finalizes the temporary final rule that went into effect on August 20, 2025, which launched a 12-month long Visa Bond Pilot Program (Pilot Program), and establishes a permanent visa bond program... Consular officers may require covered nonimmigrant visa applicants to post a bond of up to $20,000 as a condition of visa issuance," the U.S. State Department notice stated.
Such deposits may be mandated for B-1 and B-2 visa applications submitted for business or travel purposes.
The policy goes into effect on the date of its publication in the U.S. Federal Register on August 3, 2026.
