The US Department of the Treasury has imposed new sanctions on over 115 individuals, companies, and ships linked to Iran. As reported by Al Jazeera, this move is described as the largest "Iran-related action" since 2018.
The sanctions were announced on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, targeting 52 vessels owned by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, the son of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's advisor.
The official statement from the US Department of the Treasury stated, “This network transports oil and petroleum products from Iran and Russia, as well as other cargo, to buyers around the world, generating tens of billions of dollars in profit."
According to the Times of Israel, Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani controls a network of tanker and container ships through intermediary company structures, allegedly using personal connections and corrupt practices in Tehran to generate substantial profits.
Meanwhile, Ali Shamkhani, his father, has been sanctioned by the US since 2020. The US Department of the Treasury mentioned that the Shamkhani family owns several exclusive properties overseas and holds foreign passports, allowing them to travel undetected for business purposes.
“Layers of front companies with an innocuous appearance and no easily discernible connection to Hossein’s network allow it to accrue enormous profits while avoiding outside scrutiny,” the US Department of the Treasury wrote in its official statement.
The total new sanctions cover 15 shipping firms, 52 vessels, 12 individuals, and 53 entities in 17 countries, including Panama, Italy, and Hong Kong.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated, “The Shamkhani family’s shipping empire highlights how the Iranian regime elites leverage their positions to accrue massive wealth and fund the regime’s dangerous behavior.”
Bessent added that these are the largest sanctions since the Donald Trump administration's maximum pressure campaign on Iran.
On Thursday, July 31, 2025, Iran, as reported by Al Arabiya, condemned the new US sanctions targeting an oil shipping empire controlled by the son of a top political advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader as "malicious."
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei called the new US sanctions on Iran's oil trade a malicious act aimed at undermining Iran's economic development and the welfare of the Iranian people.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi previously warned that any new aggression against Iran would be met with a strong response. He wrote, "Iran, a nation with a rich culture originating from 7,000 years of civilization, will never respond to the language of threat and intimidation. Iranians have never bowed down before any foreigners and respond only to respect."
Araghchi also mentioned that Iran fully understands the exact impact of the latest American-Israeli aggression. "If aggression is repeated, we will not hesitate to react in a more decisive manner and in a way that will be IMPOSSIBLE to cover up,” he said.
He also emphasized that Iran will not yield to foreign pressure on its nuclear technology, which he described as a result of significant investment and used for peaceful purposes.
