Trump Warns: US Won't Back Israel If It Abandons Gaza Deal and Annexes West Bank

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has asserted that Israel will lose all support from the U.S. if it annexes the West Bank in Palestine and undermines the ceasefire deal in Gaza.

Trump stated on Thursday that the annexation won't happen because he has promised the Arab countries, and the U.S. has obtained significant support from them.

"Israel to lose U.S. support if West Bank annexation goes ahead," he said to The Times daily when asked about the consequences if Israel annexes the West Bank, as quoted by Antara.

A senior U.S. official also issued a strong warning to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that if he allows the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas to collapse, he will face severe consequences from U.S. President Donald Trump, as reported by Channel 12 Israel, on Thursday, as quoted by Anadolu.

Speaking in Hebrew on Channel 12, Axios correspondent Barak Ravid said that the US official warned him that Netanyahu is "walking a very thin tightrope with President Trump. If he keeps this up, he’ll end up screwing up the deal, and if he screws up the deal, Donald Trump will screw him."

The official also told Ravid that U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who concluded his diplomatic visit to Israel on Thursday morning, was surprised to hear that the Israeli parliament, or Knesset, gave initial approval on Wednesday for two non-binding bills related to annexing parts of the occupied West Bank.

Speaking at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, before his departure, Vance criticized the vote. "If this was a political stunt, it’s a very foolish one. I personally take offence to it."

An Israeli official also told Channel 12 that Netanyahu had been warned several days earlier about the strong reaction that would occur after the vote, but did nothing to prevent it.

The Israeli parliament approved two bills related to annexation in the initial reading. Both bills must pass three additional readings to become law.

Last September, Trump stated that he would not allow Israel to annex the West Bank.

Axios portal, which cited an anonymous source familiar with the issue, reported that the White House had explained to Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu that continuing the conflict in the Middle East would only further isolate Israel.

Trump proposed a 20-point peace plan in Gaza on September 29, calling for an immediate ceasefire, with the condition of releasing hostages within 72 hours.

The plan also proposed that Hamas or other armed Palestinian groups not be included in the new government in the Gaza Strip, and the control of the territory be handed over to a technocratic committee supervised by Trump's leading international body.

On October 9, Israel and Hamas reached an agreement to implement the first stage of the plan to end the armed conflict in the Gaza Strip that had been ongoing for two years.

On October 13, Trump, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a ceasefire declaration in the Palestinian enclave.

The agreement required Hamas to release 20 living Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023. In return, Israel released 1,718 Palestinian prisoners from Gaza and 250 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons.
