TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump has threatened to block Canadian aircraft maker Bombardier from selling planes in the United States unless the company manufactures them domestically, escalating a trade dispute with Ottawa.
According to DW, Trump made the threat in a post on Truth Social late Monday, September 7, as Canada prepared to impose retaliatory tariffs on US goods.
"NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren't good enough!" Trump wrote.
"If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a 'piggybank,'" he added.
Trump did not explain how a ban on Bombardier aircraft would be enforced. The company's aircraft are certified for the US market and its operations are closely integrated with the American aerospace industry.
Bombardier highlights US operations
Bombardier responded by highlighting its significant economic footprint in the United States.
The Canadian company employs about 3,500 people in the US and works with around 2,800 US suppliers. It said it spends more than $2.5 billion annually with American suppliers and operates manufacturing and service facilities across the country, as cited by DW.
Bombardier also produces aircraft components in the US, including wings for its Global 8000 business jet in Texas, while a facility in Kansas prepares aircraft for special-mission and defense purposes.
About half of the company's customer-operated fleet is based in the United States, according to the company.
Threat comes amid Canada-US trade dispute
Trump's threat came hours before Canada was due to impose retaliatory tariffs worth about US$20 billion on American goods.
The measures include tariffs of up to 50 percent on selected US imports and follow Washington's tariffs on Canadian products. Canada has said the countermeasures are a response to the US trade actions.
The dispute has also spilled into the aviation industry. Trump has accused Canada of restricting US aircraft maker Gulfstream Aerospace, a claim Ottawa has disputed.
The latest threat follows earlier pressure from Trump on Bombardier. In January, he threatened to revoke certification for some Bombardier jets and impose tariffs on Canadian-made aircraft, although those measures were not implemented.
The US and Canadian aerospace industries are deeply interconnected, with Bombardier relying on thousands of American suppliers and using US-made components in its aircraft.
Trump's latest demand therefore adds another layer to an already escalating trade dispute between the two neighboring countries.
