TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the United States, Donald Trump, held phone calls with the governments of Thailand and Cambodia on Friday in an effort to ease the recent spike in border tensions between the two countries.

According to Anadolu, citing a White House official, “President Trump held calls with Thailand and Cambodia in an effort to mediate the most recent conflict. He engaged with Malaysia as well to help end the violence/

The diplomatic push followed Thailand’s announcement that it was suspending a ceasefire agreement previously brokered by the United States.

Bangkok has demanded an apology from Cambodia after accusing Phnom Penh of planting new landmines along the border, an allegation Cambodia has firmly denied.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that he spoke directly with President Trump about the situation. In a statement posted on X, Anwar said both Thailand and Cambodia had withdrawn their troops from the border in accordance with the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement.

He welcomed Washington’s involvement, saying, “Therefore, I welcome the active role of President Trump, who has also reached out to the Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand to ensure that any differences are handled in an orderly manner, to guarantee regional stability and harmony.

Anwar added that both countries had expressed readiness to pursue peaceful dialogue. He noted that during his conversation with Trump, they discussed the latest developments and reaffirmed that Cambodia and Thailand were committed to diplomacy as the most effective path forward.

Armed Clashes at the Border

Border tensions escalated after an armed confrontation on Wednesday that left one civilian dead and three others injured. According to Cambodia News, provincial spokesperson Norng Vuthy said Cambodia evacuated hundreds of residents from Prey Chan Village following the incident.

Thailand, however, denied firing the first shots and accused Cambodian forces of opening fire into Thai territory.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the Thai Army said its troops took cover and returned fire “using necessary force in accordance with the rules of engagement” to halt the incident, defend national sovereignty, and ensure the safety of military personnel.
