TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Tropical Cyclone Iggy, observed by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), is swirling in the waters south of West Java, approximately 600 kilometers southwest of Cilacap, Central Java, on Thursday, January 1, 2026.
Based on BMKG's analysis, the cyclone is moving southeast-south with a speed of 8 knots or 15 kilometers per hour. BMKG weather forecaster Hesti Heningtiyas stated in a written statement on Thursday, January 1, 2026, that it is "moving away from Indonesian waters."
The strength of the tropical cyclone has reached 40 knots or 75 kilometers per hour, classified as category 1. BMKG predicts Tropical Cyclone Iggy to continue moving away from Indonesia on Friday, January 2, 2026, approximately 740 kilometers south of Cilacap.
The cyclone is moving southeast at a speed of 8 knots or 15 kilometers per hour, but the strength is expected to increase to 55 knots or equivalent to 100 kilometers per hour. Hesti stated, "The Tropical Cyclone Igggy is expected to strengthen to category 2 in the next 24 hours, moving southeast away from Indonesian waters."
According to BMKG, the development of Tropical Cyclone Iggy indirectly impacts the waters of Indonesia. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in the regions of Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta.
The wave height is expected to be moderate at around 1.25-2.5 meters in the waters of the western Indonesian Ocean towards Bengkulu. Meanwhile, high waves ranging from 2.5-4 meters are expected in the western Indonesian Ocean towards Lampung, the southern part of the Sunda Strait, the waters south of Banten to East Java, Bali, and East Nusa Tenggara.
BMKG states that Tropical Cyclone Iggy is the result of the development of the tropical cyclone seed 90S, which began to form on the afternoon of December 29, 2025, in the southwestern Indian Ocean off Lampung. It reached tropical cyclone intensity on Thursday morning.
