TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ahead of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made headlines by announcing Canada’s intention to formally recognize the State of Palestine.
This significant diplomatic move positions Canada alongside the United Kingdom and France, both of which declared similar commitments earlier this month.
In a detailed press release, the Canadian government also voiced its stance on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, pledging over $340 million in humanitarian aid to help alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in the besieged enclave.
As of March 2025, 147 out of 193 UN member states, or around 75 per cent have officially recognized Palestinian statehood. These endorsements span continents, reflecting a broad global consensus that includes nations from Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.
Just last year, nine countries: Armenia, Bahamas, Barbados, Ireland, Jamaica, Norway, Spain, as well as Trinidad and Tobago officially recognized the state of Palestine.
In recent years, a growing number of countries have also stepped up in support of Palestine, with Indonesia leading the charge as a long-standing supporter of Palestinian independence. Joining this wave of diplomatic backing are major global nations such as China, Russia, and India.
