Super Typhoon Bavi Affects Millions Across China

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as two million residents in China have been affected by the extreme rain brought by Tropical Cyclone Bavi. Dubbed a "super typhoon," the storm made landfall in the coastal city of Taizhou on the night of Saturday, July 11, 2026. The Chinese government has declared a high-level alert to anticipate further damage from the storm, which initially formed in the West Pacific Ocean.

The China Meteorological Administration reported that Typhoon Bavi made landfall on the Taizhou coastline at around 11:20 p.m. local time. When it made landfall, the storm unleashed winds with maximum speeds of up to 144 kilometers per hour. This puts Bavi in Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Its massive 1,000-kilometer-wide eye made it the largest storm to threaten East Asia in decades.

Although its speed is predicted to slow down and weaken as it moves northwest, weather experts have warned of the extreme risks of flash floods and landslides. Furthermore, Cyclone Bavi is a giant storm, with rain bands stretching from one end to the other that are equivalent in size to the entire land area of France.

Citing a Nikkei Asia report on July 12, 2026, over 1,300 trees fell across Yueqing, China. Official media reports from local government CCTV also showed severe flooding. There were also reports of landslides and falling rocks in mountainous areas, as well as overflowing rivers after the extreme rain triggered by the cyclone.

The impact extended to China's transportation networks. In Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, two major railway stations suspended all services, and 327 flights were canceled at Xiaoshan International Airport. In the neighboring city of Shanghai, a total of 1,620 train trips and 684 flights were canceled, according to the government-owned newspaper, The Paper.

This storm system is expected to continue bringing heavy rain to other parts of China, posing a flood risk in the days ahead. This situation is in line with the earlier predictions by scientists that China would face more extreme weather this year.

Typhoon Bavi hit southern China just days after Typhoon Maysak, causing dozens of fatalities and extensive damage to agricultural land. Bavi passed through the southern Philippines and the northern part of Taiwan before hitting the southeast coast of China. The Sakishima Islands in Japan were also affected during its passage.
