TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq al-Said will visit Moscow on Monday, April 21, 2025, a few days after the start of the round of nuclear negotiations mediated by Muscat between the United States and Iran.

The Sultan of Oman will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, said the Kremlin.

Iran and the US initiated a new round of nuclear negotiations in Rome on Saturday to resolve their decades-long deadlock over Tehran's nuclear objectives. However, these negotiations are under the shadow of President Donald Trump's threat to launch military action if diplomacy fails.

Prior to the Saturday negotiations, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.

Following the meeting, Lavrov said Russia is "ready to help, mediate, and play any role that would be beneficial for Iran and the US."

Moscow has played a role in past Iranian nuclear negotiations as a member of the UN Security Council with a veto right and a signatory to previous agreements that were abandoned by Trump during his first term in 2018.

The Sultan's meeting during the visit to Moscow will focus on cooperation on regional and global issues, Oman's state news agency and the Kremlin said, without providing further details.

The two leaders are also expected to discuss trade and economic relations, the Kremlin added.
