TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sony stated that it has secured the memory supply needed to meet its PlayStation 5 (PS5) console sales targets for fiscal year 2026 amidst global memory shortages due to high demand from the artificial intelligence industry.

According to Engadget on Friday, July 31, 2026, in an effort to reassure investors, Sony announced in its latest financial report that the company has secured the memory needed to meet projected PS5 sales for the fiscal year ending April 2027.

"Due to the impact of memory market conditions on PlayStation 5 hardware, we have secured the amount of memory necessary to meet projected sales volumes for fiscal year 2026," Sony said.

The company did not disclose any plans to raise the price of the PS5 in the coming year.

However, Sony is likely to see a significant increase in PS5 sales during the holidays, as the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to release on November 19, 2026.

Sony sold 1.6 million PS5 units during the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, down from 2.5 million units in the same period the previous year.

A similar decline occurred in the previous quarter, likely due to price increases resulting from US import tariffs and the PS5's sixth year.

Sony has cumulatively shipped 95.3 million PS5 units since its launch in 2020.

Although sales declined in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, Sony generated more revenue compared to the same period last year.

Profits rose 37 percent year-on-year to 54.1 billion yen (approximately Rp6.1 trillion).

In the gaming business, the company's overall sales remained relatively stable. Sales of third-party games increased, but shipments of games from Sony's internal studios decreased by about 900,000 units.

Meanwhile, the number of monthly active PlayStation users increased by two million to a total of 125 million.
