TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of the Public Relations Division of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Grand Commissioner Budi Hermanto, stated that a student suspected of being involved in the explosion at SMAN 72 in Jakarta had purchased explosive materials online. The police discovered this fact after questioning the father of the child, who is facing legal issues. "Yes, it was bought online, the package was received by the parents," said Budi when confirmed on Friday, November 21, 2025.
According to Budi, the parents did not suspect the package containing explosive materials because the child claimed it was for an extracurricular assignment from school. "He told his parents that the package was for an extracurricular activity, that's why it was kept," he said.
However, the police have not been able to confirm the origin of the explosive materials purchased online. The police have not been able to obtain a statement from the child facing legal issues, as the student is still under medical care and in an unstable condition. The student has been transferred to the medical care unit at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital.
Budi mentioned that the student facing legal issues is known to be a quiet person, both at home and at school. The family did not expect their child to plan an explosion at their school.
The explosion at SMAN 72 occurred while students and teachers were performing Friday prayers on November 7, 2025. The first explosion occurred in the third-floor prayer room, followed by a second explosion a few minutes later in the rear cafeteria area. The explosions resulted in 96 people being injured.
When the police visited the scene, they found a toy gun with the names of three perpetrators of mosque shootings in various countries: Brenton Tarrant, Alexandre Bissonnette, and Luca Traini. The police also found improvised explosive materials. Overall, the student facing legal issues is suspected of planting seven bombs at SMAN 72. Four bombs detonated, while three others were still active when they were found.
Based on statements from several witnesses, the police concluded that the student facing legal issues felt lonely and lacked friends or family to confide in.
The police stated that the student facing legal issues could potentially be charged under Article 80 paragraph 2 in conjunction with Article 76C of the Child Protection Law, Article 355 of the Criminal Code (KUHP), Article 187 of the KUHP, and Article 1 Paragraph 1 of Emergency Law Number 12 of 1951.
