Sangihe Islands Hit by M5.1 Earthquake Followed by M3.9 Aftershock, Says BMKG

1 week ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5.1 magnitude earthquake jolted the sea around the Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi, in the early hours of Wednesday, April 9, 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the tremor detected at 02:25 WIB (Western Indonesia Time) was centered at sea, about 126 kilometers northwest of Tahuna, the Sangihe Islands.

The Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, Daryono, stated that the earthquake was classified as shallow with a depth of 24 kilometers. Its movement mechanism includes oblique-thrust. "It occurred as a result of plate subduction," he said in an official statement on Wednesday morning.

Referring to BMKG's records, the tremor was felt with an intensity scale of III MMI in the Tahuna area. The vibrations were felt by residents indoors as if a truck was passing by. The BMKG team noted a subsequent earthquake with a magnitude of M3.9 at 02:56 WIB, half an hour after the initial incident.

"Modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami," said Daryono.

He urged the community at the earthquake site to remain calm and always monitor information from BMKG. There was also an appeal to avoid buildings with cracks or damage. "Make sure your residential building is earthquake-resistant and free from damage due to tremors," he added.
