TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Vladimir Putin has ordered several emergency aircraft to be sent to Iran to assist in dealing with the explosion at the Shahid Rajaee Port, Iran, the Russian emergency ministry said on Sunday, as reported by Al Arabiya.
Putin has become one of the first world leaders to offer assistance to Iran after a major explosion at a container depot in the main port near the Strait of Hormuz.
The Russian Emergency Ministry said that a Be-200 amphibious aircraft specially used for firefighting and a military transport aircraft, the Ilyushin Il-76, will be sent to Iran to help deal with the fire after the explosion.
Putin has expressed condolences for the loss of life and offered assistance to Iran in dealing with the impact of the explosion, the Kremlin said.
It is said that Putin has expressed "sincere sympathy and support to the families and friends of the victims, as well as wishes for a speedy recovery to all those injured."
The fire continued for almost 24 hours after the explosion at the giant Shahid Rajaee port in southern Iran, the country's most important port and a major world trade route. The death toll has risen to at least 28 people, and the number of injured has increased to over 1,000.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian flew to Bandar Abbas, a city located 20 miles west of the port in Hormozgan Province, for a briefing on the investigation and rescue operation.
With choking smoke and air pollution spreading across the region, schools and offices in Bandar Abbas were ordered to close on Sunday, according to the government TV report. Iran's Health Ministry urged people not to leave their homes until further notice and to use protective masks.
CCTV footage circulated in Iranian media showed a local fire that started five minutes after noon on Saturday in one container and quickly spread to another, with port workers beginning to run. A large explosion then occurred within two minutes, disabling the camera.
The explosion occurred just as the third round of talks between the United States and Iran began, designed to produce new controls over Iran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of U.S. sanctions.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry described the talks, mediated by Oman and held in Muscat, as serious, practical, and more detailed than previous negotiations. The next round of talks will be held in Europe on May 3, 2025.
