TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Russian Ministry of Transportation announced on Monday, July 14, 2025, that direct flights between Moscow and Pyongyang will begin on July 27, 2025. According to the Korea Times on July 15, this will be the first air route connecting Russia and North Korea.
Nordwind Airlines, a Russian low-cost carrier, will operate the monthly flights with an estimated travel time of around eight hours. The service was approved after Rosaviatsiya, Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, granted permission for regular air travel between the two countries.
Nordwind Airlines Flight
The launch of Nordwind Airlines' new route follows official clearance from Russian aviation authorities to operate direct flights between Moscow and Pyongyang.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that both countries plan to strengthen air connectivity after initiating key partnerships for bilateral cooperation and exchange, including the signing of a joint defense pact.
In June 2025, Russia and North Korea resumed railway services between Pyongyang and Moscow, and between Pyongyang and Khabarovsk, after a long halt caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In April, the two nations also began constructing a bridge over the Tumen River to link their road networks.
During a recent visit to North Korea’s eastern coastal city, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Russia also aims to restore maritime transport routes with North Korea.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged unconditional support for all of Russia’s actions in the war in Ukraine. He made this declaration during his diplomatic meeting with Lavrov in Wonsan on Sunday, July 13.
Military Cooperation
Following the meeting between Kim Jong Un and Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement via Telegram on Saturday, July 12, 2025. The post included a video showing the two leaders shaking hands and embracing in Wonsan. The visit had previously been announced by state media from both countries.
Throughout the more than three-year conflict in Ukraine, North Korea has remained a strong ally of Moscow. Thousands of North Korean soldiers have reportedly been deployed to Russia, armed with conventional weapons, to assist in expelling Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region.
