TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - East Java's Lumajang Regent Indah Amperawati has called on residents living in high-risk areas around Mount Semeru, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, to evacuate immediately as volcanic activity intensifies.
The evacuation appeal targets communities in Sumberwuluh Village, Jugosari, Candipuro Subdistrict, and Pronojiwo Subdistrict, all located near the volcano’s southeastern slopes in East Java.
“The safety of our residents is the top priority. This evacuation is intended to protect every family, and the process has been arranged to run safely and orderly,” Indah said in a written statement on Wednesday.
She explained that the local government, together with the Lumajang Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), has prepared adequate evacuation shelters.
“We are maintaining close coordination with village authorities and volunteers to assist residents as they move to safer locations,” she added.

Indah also advised families to bring only essential items such as masks, drinking water, necessary medications, and important documents. She emphasized that the evacuation is a precaution, not a cause for panic.
“With proper preparedness, we can face this situation calmly. The government and the community are working together to ensure everyone’s safety,” she said.
The Lumajang BPBD and local authorities continue to monitor Mount Semeru’s condition in real time and will issue updates through official channels. Residents are urged to rely solely on verified information and avoid circulating unconfirmed reports to maintain public safety and calm.
As reported earlier, Indonesia’s Geological Agency raised Mount Semeru’s alert status to Level IV, the highest level, on Wednesday afternoon following renewed eruptions and pyroclastic flows from the 3,676-meter volcano.
