TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russian President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump had a two-hour long phone call. After the call, US President Donald Trump stated that Russia and Ukraine will soon begin negotiations to achieve a ceasefire. Meanwhile, Putin stated that they are on the right track.
Trump mentioned that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on the ceasefire will begin soon. The war between the two countries has entered its fourth year.
Putin said that efforts to end the conflict are on the right track and Moscow is ready to work with Ukraine to draft a memorandum of understanding on a peace agreement in the future.
Putin thanked Trump for supporting the resumption of direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. He stated that Trump took note of Russia's support for peace. However, the main question is how to achieve peace.
"We have agreed with the President of the United States that Russia will propose and is ready to work with Ukraine to draft a memorandum of understanding on the possibility of a peace agreement in the future, which would define a number of positions, such as, for example, principles of settlement, (and) the time for a possible peace agreement," Putin told reporters near the Black Sea resort of Sochi as quoted by Al Jazeera.
If the right agreement is reached, then there could be a ceasefire, Putin said. He added that talks between Russia and Ukraine indicate that they are on the right track.
"I would like to note that, overall, Russia's position is clear. The main thing for us is to remove the root causes of this crisis," Putin said. "We only need to determine the most effective way to move towards peace."
Comments made by the Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday morning, quoted by the Russian government's news agency, indicated there is no urgency from Moscow to take further steps.
"There is no deadline and there will not be one. Obviously, everyone wants to do this as quickly as possible, but, of course, the details are very important," Peskov said.
Meanwhile, Trump said the phone call went very well. In a post on Truth Social, he stated that the Vatican, as represented by the Pope, had expressed a keen interest in hosting the negotiations. "Let the process begin!" Trump said.
On Monday, Trump said it would be great to hold ceasefire negotiations in the Vatican as it would give additional meaning to the negotiations process.
Describing his phone conversation with Putin, Trump said he told him: "When are we going to end this, Vladimir?" He added that there may come a time when sanctions are imposed on Russia, without providing further details.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he is ready to negotiate with Russia in Turkey, Switzerland, or the Vatican. He reiterated the call for a full and unconditional ceasefire.
"There is no need to convince Ukraine, and our representatives are ready to make real decisions in negotiations," Zelensky said in a statement.
There has been no official statement from the Vatican. According to Catholic News Agency, last Friday, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State, told journalists that Pope Leo XIV plans to offer the Vatican as the site for a direct meeting between Putin and Zelensky.
