Protest Call Targets DPR on August 25, Labor Party Confirms Separate Rally

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An invitation to join a protest in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building on August 25, 2025, has been circulating on social media under the banner of the "Indonesian People’s Revolution." The call urges workers, farmers, students, and the general public to take to the streets.

The message, received by Tempo on Friday, August 22, highlights demands for an investigation into alleged corruption involving the family of former president Joko Widodo and the impeachment of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

“Continue to pressure the DPR to perform its duties as a government oversight,” the circulated invitation read.

Beyond political issues, the invitation also raises concerns over tax hikes, Indonesia’s growing national debt, and what it describes as an unfair gap between DPR members’ welfare and that of ordinary citizens.

Labor Party Plans Its Own Protest

Labor Party President Said Iqbal confirmed that his group shares concerns with some of the issues raised in the online invitation but stressed that the Labor Party’s rally will take place on August 28, not August 25.

“Tens of thousands of workers from various regions will demonstrate in front of the DPR building and the State Palace,” Said told Tempo. He added that simultaneous rallies would also be staged in major industrial cities, including Serang (Banten), Samarinda (East Kalimantan), and Makassar.

According to Said, the protest will carry the theme “Abolish Outsourcing and Reject Low Wages.” He argued that the government has failed to show support for workers, who remain burdened with wages that do not match inflation and economic growth as mandated by Constitutional Court Decision No. 168.

Said also criticized lawmakers’ housing allowance of Rp 50 million per month, which he contrasted with workers’ average monthly wages of only Rp 5 million. “This is a real portrait of the wealth gap in this country,” he said.

Student Alliance Denies Involvement

Meanwhile, the Alliance of the Executive Board of Students All Over Indonesia (BEM SI) Kerakyatan denied participating in the August 25 protest.

“I confirm that the use of BEM SI Kerakyatan’s name for the August 25 demonstration is not true,” said Media Coordinator Pasha Fazillah Afap.

He explained that BEM SI Kerakyatan had already held a demonstration in front of the DPR on Thursday, August 21, demanding the cancellation of what they described as problematic bills and the rejection of policies that benefit oligarchs.

“Democracy should belong to everyone, not the military, which is increasingly encroaching on civilian domains, nor policies that harm the people,” Pasha added.
