Prabowo Targets Ending Indonesia's Fuel Imports Within 3 Years

2 weeks ago 21

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Prabowo Subianto said he believes Indonesia could stop importing fuel within the next three years, as the government accelerates its shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Prabowo made the statement during the inauguration of an electric commercial vehicle assembly plant owned by PT VKTR Sakti Industries in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday, April 9, 2026.

He said the target is tied to Indonesia’s broader plan to reduce reliance on imported fuel and strengthen national energy independence through the transition to renewable sources.

“Maybe in the next two to three years, we will no longer need to import fuel at all. We have great strength. If we are serious, we will become self-reliant, strong, and stand on our own feet,” Prabowo said, as quoted from a livestream broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.

To cut dependence on fuel imports and secure long-term energy self-sufficiency, Prabowo said the government aims to build solar power plants with a combined capacity of up to 100 gigawatts within the next two years.

Indonesia has been pushing its energy transition agenda by expanding renewable energy development, which officials say is essential to reducing imports and strengthening the country’s energy security.

As part of the electrification drive, the government also plans to shut down 13 diesel-fired power plants operated by state electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN).

“There should no longer be any power plants using diesel fuel. No more,” Prabowo said.

The former defense minister said closing the diesel plants would have a significant impact on national energy savings. He claimed the move could reduce oil consumption by as much as 200,000 barrels per day, equivalent to cutting fuel imports by around 20 percent.

“We still need to import one million barrels a day right now. By shutting down diesel power plants, we can immediately save 20 percent,” he said.
