TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday warned that the law must not be used as a tool for political revenge or to serve political interests.
Speaking at the 80th anniversary ceremony of the Indonesian National Police, known as Bhayangkara Day, in Cikeas, Bogor, Prabowo said the legal system must be applied fairly and should never serve the interests of powerful individuals or particular groups.
"The law must not become a tool for those with money. The law must not become a tool for political revenge. The law must not be used for the interests of any group," Prabowo said during the ceremony at the Mobile Brigade Corps Police Training Center on Wednesday.
The president also reiterated the Indonesian principle that the law should not be "sharp downward and blunt upward," a widely used expression criticizing unequal law enforcement in which ordinary people face harsher treatment than the powerful.
Prabowo, who also chairs the Gerindra Party, said Indonesia is a state governed by the rule of law and stressed that laws must be enforced fairly.
"There should be no criminalization. There should be no abuse of authority, and no one should be immune from the law," he said.
Prabowo added that the legal system should protect the public, particularly vulnerable communities, and provide justice for those seeking legal protection.
"The law should be a refuge for the weak. The righteous should feel safe, while the guilty should be held accountable for their actions," he said.
The remarks were delivered during the Indonesian National Police's 80th Bhayangkara Day celebration, held under the theme "80 Years of Polri's Service to the Community." The event featured tactical demonstrations by police personnel, including vehicle convoys, parachute displays, and parades involving units from the Indonesian National Police, the Indonesian Military (TNI), and partner organizations.
