TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto commended Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, describing him as a great governor despite hailing from a different political party. "I must admit that if there is a great governor, I acknowledge that he is great," said Prabowo while inaugurating the Jakarta LRT's Kelapa Gading-Manggarai route at Manggarai LRT Station in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Prabowo made the statement while congratulating Pramono and Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno on Jakarta's public transportation development.
The President said differing political party backgrounds do not stop him from commending regional heads he believes have performed well. "Even though they aren't from my party, this should spur other parties on, right? I mean, they need to do their jobs properly," Prabowo said, as quoted by ANTARA.
Prabowo claims that the collaboration between the central government and the Jakarta Provincial Government shows that the government can function effectively even when its leaders belong to different political parties.
He said that he and Pramono came from different parties and had once been rivals in a general election. However, they were both able to work together because they had received a mandate from the people. "We come from different parties. We compete in general elections. But we can work together. We can respect one another," said Prabowo.
The President said the mandate obtained through general elections must be used to serve the community. "We are servants of the people. We serve the people. Our thoughts, our energy, and our efforts are all for the people of Indonesia," he said.
Prabowo also touched upon Pramono's report regarding Jakarta's economic developments, including economic growth and investment. "The Governor reported earlier that growth in DKI (Jakarta) has increased. Companies that were previously somewhat sluggish are now rebounding. Investment has risen tremendously," he said.
Prabowo believes that cooperation and mutual collaboration among leaders are essential to drive Indonesia's development and progress. "If leaders can work together—can engage in mutual cooperation, and indeed must do so—this nation will rise to become an extraordinary nation," he said.
