TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have reaffirmed their commitment to the centrality of ASEAN in the Indo-Pacific region. Both leaders agreed to uphold peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
Prabowo and Albanese pledged to continue working together to support the concrete implementation of ASEAN's Outlook on the Indo-Pacific. This commitment builds on the Special ASEAN-Australia Summit in Melbourne in 2024, which marked the 50th anniversary of relations between the two sides.
"The leaders welcomed the Quad’s support for ASEAN centrality, the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, and practical cooperation in the region," they stated in a joint statement on Thursday, May 15, 2025, as quoted from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' official release. The Quad is a security dialogue alliance comprising Australia, India, Japan, and the United States.
Furthermore, Prabowo and Albanese reiterated their commitment to supporting an ASEAN-centered regional architecture that is open, inclusive, transparent, resilient, and based on rules upholding international law. This framework will rely on ASEAN-led mechanisms, including the East Asia Summit (EAS), the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM Plus).
Both leaders committed to strengthening the EAS as the primary forum for dialogue and cooperation on strategic, political, and economic issues of common interest and concern. They also reaffirmed their support for Timor-Leste's full membership in ASEAN.
Prabowo hosted Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Thursday, May 15, 2025. Albanese's visit is his first official trip abroad since winning the general election.
Albanese arrived at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta, on Wednesday evening, May 14, 2025, at 6:30 PM local time. His arrival marked the beginning of a three-day official visit scheduled from May 14 to May 16, 2025.
