Orionid Meteor Shower to Light Up October's Moonless Skies

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Orionid meteor shower will radiate the moonless sky next week, peaking on October 20-21, 2025, with about 10-20 meteors raining across the point of origin in the constellation Orion.

At its full force, the Orionid meteor shower could be deemed to be one of the most beautiful shows of the year, as per NASA. Unlike the Perseids, whose August peak was shadowed by a waning moon, the absence of moon this period is predicted to bring the Orionid meteor shower into its best moment yet.

Orionid Meteor Shower and its Fast-Paced Glamour

Named after the constellation of Orion, the Orionid meteor shower is known to be extremely fast meteors, tumbling into the Earth’s atmosphere at around 41 miles per second or 66 km/s. However, EarthSky added the Orionid meteor rain usually leaves ionized gas trails lasting for a few seconds after, which will be best seen against a pristinely dark sky.

In 2025, the Orionid meteor shower is active from October 2 to November 7, with a prediction to peak in the early hours of October 22. While these spectacles aren’t labeled as the year’s strongest shower, 10 to 20 Orionids are guaranteed to appear per hour at their peak.

Orionid Meteor Shower and its Color Pallette

The blistering speed of Orionids never deters skygazers from catching the alluring beauty of a meteor shower. While color isn't exactly a trait of this Orion’s offspring, the Orionids can appear faintly yellow with a hint of orange, or even green.

Depending on their composition, these extremely fast meteor showers can produce sharp flashes across the dim night sky. Even so, don’t expect such colors of the Perseids or Geminids to occur during the spectacles.

How to Watch the Orionids Meteor Shower

The Orionid meteor shower, which radiates from the direction of the famed constellation Orion the Hunter, offers a dazzling celestial performance each October.

As Orion ascends in the eastern sky after midnight, meteors begin to emerge, though they typically become visible only after moving about 30 degrees away from their radiant point.

These luminous streaks of light can be seen darting across all corners of the sky, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that feels both vast and intimate.

Best of all, no telescopes or binoculars are required to enjoy the show as the Orionids are easily visible to the naked eye. Simply find a dark, open space away from city lights, allow your eyes time to adjust to the night, and prepare to witness one of the season’s most captivating astronomical displays.

How to Photograph the Orionids Meteor Shower?

To capture the most striking photographs of the Orionids or any meteor shower, Spacedotcom suggests a digital camera equipped with manual controls. For optimal results, skywatchers are encouraged to use full-frame, APS-C, or Micro Four Thirds cameras paired with a sturdy tripod to ensure stability and eliminate motion blur during long exposures.

Reducing your lens’s focal length significantly enhances your chances of framing a meteor streak within the shot. For full-frame setups, lenses between 14mm and 35mm work beautifully, while a 10mm to 50mm range suits APS-C cameras best. Remember to always set to the lowest possible f-stop to maximize light intake and capture the brilliance of the night sky.
