Online Taxi Drivers to Stage Mass Protest Today; Palace Responds

8 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hasan Nasbi, the head of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), said the government has swiftly responded to the demands of online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers. The Ministry of Transportation, he said, has spoken with representatives of ojol drivers to address several relevant issues.

"It seems like the meeting has just concluded today. They also conducted a briefing with the media crew. The Ministry of Transportation responded quickly (to drivers' demands)," he said on Monday, May 19, 2025.

According to Hasan, the Indonesian government has taken proactive steps to accommodate the complaints and aspirations of ojol drivers by creating a space for a dialogue.

"The ministry is open to discussing aspirations related to regulations and welfare," he added.

Hasan emphasized that the government recognize citizens' rights to express their opinions "as a constitutional right," but urged for the protests to be mindful of public interests and be held in an "orderly manner."

According to Hasan, the ministry and related institutions will take note of ojol drivers' input and seek the best solution that benefits all stakeholders.

"We hope to find a fair middle ground. Where ojol business continues, the people are serviced, and the drivers' welfare improves," he added.

Ojol drivers plan to stage a mass protest on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, starting at 1:00 p.m. Jakarta time.

The protest is prompted by the lack of adequate responses by the government and service providers to a number of drivers' demands, including transparent and fair revenue sharing.

Furthermore, they seek adjustment on what they deem a disproportionate base tariff, in comparison to operational costs and living expenses. Ojol drivers also hope for social protection, including health insurance and work accident guarantees.

In addition, the community of online taxi drivers also rejects the practice of unilateral account suspension by service providers without a transparent process and requests to be involved in the policy-making process related to their work.

As a form of protest, ojol drivers plan to deactivate the online motorcycle taxi application for a full 24 hours, which is estimated to impact transportation services and the delivery of goods in various cities.
