MPR Debunks Rumors of Extending Presidential Term to 8 Years

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani has affirmed that there is no plan to change the presidential term limit. The Gerindra Party politician also stated that the rumors suggesting a change to the presidential term are not part of the discussions on the Basic Guidelines of State Policy (PPHN).

According to Article 7 of the 1945 Constitution, the president is allowed to serve for two terms, with each term lasting five years. Recently, speculation arose suggesting an extension of the presidential term to eight years.

"In the MPR, there is no viewpoint, no consideration, none at all," Muzani stated at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

The former Gerindra Secretary General urged the public not to spread such rumors. "Do not develop something that is not even considered in our minds at all," Muzani said.

Regarding whether the presidential term periodization will be discussed in the PPHN, Muzani was unequivocal. "Not at all. It's baseless, it's purely fictitious, not at all," he said.

Consistent with Muzani's stance, Deputy Speaker of the MPR Hidayat Nur Wahid also denied the issue of extending the presidential term. "It never emerged in any MPR meeting. It was never formally presented to the MPR," said the politician from the Justice and Prosperity Party (PKS) on Monday, August 18, 2025.

Hidayat also emphasized that such a discourse contradicts the constitution. To accommodate a change in the presidential term, an amendment to the 1945 Constitution would be necessary. "Amending the Constitution has its requirements, proposed by at least one-third of the MPR members, and currently, not one has proposed a change in the presidential term," Hidayat explained.
