TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chair of Indonesia’s People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Ahmad Muzani, emphasized that Indonesia is not taking sides in the conflict between the United States and Iran.
"As a country that adheres to an independent and active policy, Indonesia cannot possibly take sides in a situation like this," said Ahmad Muzani during a meeting with Islamic boarding school leaders and Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Indonesia Faisal Abdullah Al Amoudi in Jakarta on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara.
Muzani stated that, amid this conflict, Indonesia has an obligation to continuously seek peaceful solutions through its free and active policy so that diplomacy becomes a means of resolving all differences.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also emphasized this stance in his communications with the leaders of Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia.
"The clerics, kiai, and leaders of Islamic boarding schools who are gathered here and those who are not yet present also hope that Indonesia will play an active role in peace efforts in the Middle East," he said.
Furthermore, fostering peace is part of the constitutional mandate, as stated in the preamble to the 1945 Constitution. He believes that the ulama have their own methods of encouraging peace negotiations, which could lead to peace in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Muzani expressed his appreciation for Saudi Arabia's restraint amid the ongoing volatility in the Middle East.
Although the peace talks between the U.S. and Iran in Pakistan have not yet produced an agreement, Muzani hopes that diplomacy and peaceful efforts will continue to be the way to achieve peace.
"We must believe in the power of diplomacy and negotiation, because diplomacy and negotiation have been able to maintain world peace for decades since the Second World War," he said.
