TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that Iran's "New Regime President" had requested a ceasefire with Washington, but said the US would only consider the request if the Strait of Hormuz was opened.

"Iran’s New Regime President, much less Radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE!," Trump said on the platform Truth Social.

Washington will only consider the request if the Strait of Hormuz is "open, free, and clear," Trump said, saying the US would continue bombing Iran until "into oblivion or, as they say, back to the stone ages" before that is achieved.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeli Baqaei immediately denied Trump's claim, saying the claim that Tehran is seeking a ceasefire is not realistic.

Axios, citing three US officials, reported that negotiations are underway to secure a ceasefire in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Officials said Trump was actively discussing the possibility with parties both inside and outside the administration, though he also cautioned that it remained unclear whether a deal could be reached.

The sources did not specify whether the dialogue would be conducted directly between the two sides or through intermediaries such as Pakistan.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi previously stated that the ongoing dialogue with the US was not negotiations, but merely a limited exchange of messages, either directly or through intermediaries in the region.

Trump, meanwhile, has repeatedly called Iran's new leadership "much more reasonable" than the previous one.

The US president told NBC News earlier this week that he believed the war in Iran would "coming to an end" and that the US had achieved "total regime change." He also said that Washington was in communication with Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
