TEMPO.CO, Mataram - The Mount Rinjani National Park Office has suspended mountain climbing ticket purchases through the e-Rinjani application starting July 16, 2025, until further notice. The decision follows a series of accidents involving two foreign climbers on the Pelawangan route leading to Lake Segara Anak.
Mount Rinjani National Park Office Head Yarman said the closure was made to improve the extreme trail conditions.
"We have seen many incidents occur on the Pelawangan route to the lake," Yarman said on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
He did not provide specific details about the planned repairs. "Our team is assessing what needs to be fixed, whether it's installing ropes or clearing rocks, we will evaluate it," he added.
Yarman explained that climbers who have already purchased tickets are still allowed to hike to the summit but are not permitted to descend to the lake.
"We are only suspending the new climbing quota and at the same time closing the trail from Pelawangan to the lake," he said.
In the past two days, two foreign climbers were injured on the Pelawangan route to Lake Segara Anak.
Benekdikt Emmeneger, a tourist from Switzerland, suffered fractures to his leg and arm after falling on Wednesday. The next day, a Dutch tourist, Sarah Tamar van Hulten, fell in a nearby location. Both climbers were evacuated to Bali by helicopter.
Earlier, Mount Rinjani had also gained international attention after the death of Juliana Marins, a Brazilian climber who fell into a ravine while attempting to reach the summit via the Sembalun route.
