TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that Mount Anak Krakatau is exhibiting heightened volcanic activity. As of Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 9:54 a.m. WIB, the volcano situated in the Sunda Strait had recorded six eruptions in less than 10 hours.

PVMBG noted that the first eruption occurred just after midnight at 12:11 a.m. WIB. Poor visibility prevented direct visual observation of the blast, but a seismograph recorded the event with a maximum amplitude of 24 millimeters lasting for 40 seconds.

The volcanic activity resumed at 5:50 a.m. WIB, sending a plume of ash roughly 250 meters above the peak, or about 407 meters above sea level. The thick ash column, ranging from gray and brown to black, drifted toward the north and northwest. This particular eruption registered a maximum amplitude of 26.1 millimeters and lasted for 44 seconds.

Roughly an hour later, at 7:11 a.m. WIB, Anak Krakatau erupted once more. This blast produced a moderate-to-thick gray and black ash cloud that rose 250 meters above the summit before blowing northwest. The eruption continued for 31 seconds with a maximum amplitude of 44.4 millimeters.

The mountain showed no signs of calming down. At 8:42 a.m. WIB, another eruption generated a thick black ash column reaching 100 meters above the crater, or 257 meters above sea level. The dense black ash moved steadily toward the northwest. Seismographs logged this activity for 40 seconds with a maximum amplitude of 35 millimeters.

Shortly thereafter, at 9:35 a.m. WIB, Mount Anak Krakatau again discharged volcanic ash to a height of 200 meters above the peak, or 357 meters above sea level. The thick gray ash column billowed toward the northwest. This eruption was clocked at 27 seconds with a maximum amplitude of 49 millimeters.

The most recent eruption took place at 9:54 a.m. WIB. The resulting thick gray ash column reached roughly 100 meters above the summit, or 257 meters above sea level, drifting northwest.

"This eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 45 millimeters and a duration of 13 seconds," said Deny Mardiono, an officer at the Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post (PGA), in his report to PVMBG on Wednesday.

Despite the successive eruptions throughout the day, PVMBG has maintained Mount Anak Krakatau's status at Level III, or Siaga, which is the second highest level in a four-level system of alerts.

PVMBG has advised local residents, tourists, and hikers to stay away from Mount Anak Krakatau and avoid any activities within a three-kilometer radius of the active crater. Communities are also urged to monitor official reports from PVMBG to remain prepared for any further volcanic activity.
