TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim spoke via phone with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian about the ongoing conflict with Israel.
"I have just finished speaking by telephone with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, regarding the latest developments in the conflict between Iran and the Zionist regime of Israel," Anwar said in a written statement on Tuesday, June 24.
During their conversation, Pezeshkian affirmed that Iran is ready to cease military actions and embrace peace, provided Israel stops its attacks on the sovereignty of Palestine and Iran.
According to Anwar, the Iranian President also requested Malaysia's assistance in conveying this position to other Muslim countries, aiming to prevent them from being influenced by biased narratives and to ensure they understand the true context of Iran's retaliatory actions.
Anwar reiterated Malaysia's strong condemnation of Israel's attacks on Gaza and Iran. These actions, he noted, have not only resulted in civilian casualties but also the deaths of Iranian military leaders and scientists. "These actions exceed the bounds of humanity and international legal principles," he stated.
Since the outbreak of the conflict, Malaysia has consistently declared that violence is not the solution. However, within the framework of universal justice, Malaysia acknowledges Iran's right to respond to any aggression violating its sovereignty.
Anwar stated it would be hypocritical to recognize Israel's strength but reject Iran's legitimate right to self-defense.
Malaysia also welcomes Iran's commitment to seek peaceful solutions with all parties, including the United States and Israel, if the conditions of justice and sovereignty are met. Malaysia believes that only through negotiation and diplomacy can a comprehensive solution be achieved to avoid prolonged conflicts, Anwar concluded.
