TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Malaysia has expressed readiness to host new peace talks between Thailand and Cambodia to ease escalating tensions at their border. The offer was made by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan on Thursday, November 13, as reported by CNA.

This diplomatic move comes despite Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's previous assertion that his government would act based on national interests without needing to seek permission from anyone.

In a Thursday evening Facebook post, Anwar stated that he had spoken over the phone with Anutin and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. "Both leaders … reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing a peaceful resolution, in line with the understandings agreed under the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord," Anwar wrote.

Latest Border Clashes

The Thailand-Cambodia border has been volatile this week. On Monday, Thailand suspended the implementation of a peace agreement after two of its soldiers were injured by a landmine during a patrol. On Thursday, Cambodia evacuated hundreds of residents from a disputed village, a day after a villager was reported killed in a shootout there.

The dispute between the two countries stems from differing interpretations of colonial-era maps over a century ago, particularly concerning a temple complex claimed by both sides. Earlier this year, a five-day clash resulted in the deaths of 43 people and forced around 300,000 residents to flee, before a ceasefire, brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, de-escalated the situation in July and was later formalized through the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord.

Malaysia Pushes for Confidence-Building

Reported by Free Malaysia Today, Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan stated that the talks should take place in Malaysia as both countries have lost trust and confidence in each other. He mentioned that Cambodia specifically requested the discussions be held in Kuala Lumpur, while Thailand asked Malaysia to ensure the sustainability of the ceasefire.

"They were in high spirits (last month) but unfortunately, hostilities have now resurfaced at the border," said Mohamad. He added that Thailand postponed the ceasefire after some of its soldiers were injured by mines, which Thailand claimed to have been planted by Cambodian forces.

However, according to him, ASEAN observers stationed in Thailand and Cambodia reported that the mines were newly planted. Mohamad concluded, "I just spoke with the Thai foreign minister, and my hope is that both sides will remain calm and continue with peace talks."
