TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The tectonic earthquake linked to the Lembang Fault was once again felt in West Bandung Regency, West Java. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the 1.7-magnitude tremor on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at 12:28 PM WIB.
BMKG reported that the epicenter was located on land at coordinates 6.81 degrees South Latitude and 107.51 degrees East Longitude, about 3 kilometers northwest of West Bandung Regency. Hartanto, Head of BMKG Region II Tangerang, explained in a written statement that the shallow quake, with a depth of 10 kilometers, was triggered by activity along the Lembang Fault.
Reports from residents indicate that the quake was felt at an intensity level of II MMI in West Bandung Regency. This level means the vibration was noticeable to some people and caused light hanging objects to swing.
BMKG confirmed there have been no reports of damage to buildings and that no aftershocks were detected during monitoring until 01:33 PM WIB. The agency urged residents to stay calm and avoid being influenced by unverified information.

Daryono, BMKG’s Director of Earthquake and Tsunami, added that the epicenter of Wednesday’s quake was also located in the western segment of the Lembang Fault. He noted that this resembled the 2.3-magnitude earthquake recorded the previous day, Tuesday, August 19, 2025, around 11:41 AM WIB.
According to Daryono, earthquake data between 2010 and August 19, 2025, shows at least 18 quakes caused by the Lembang Fault, with five occurring this year alone between July and August.
He warned that although most Lembang Fault quakes are relatively small in magnitude, they can still cause damage because they are shallow and occur on soft ground.
“The impact becomes more severe when buildings are poorly constructed,” he said.
