THE earthquake in Karawang, West Java, early this morning, Monday, August 25, 2025, was among the latest earthquakes whose tremors were also felt in Nabire. The M3.2 earthquake was part of a series of aftershocks that shook Karawang-Bekasi last Wednesday (M4.7).

After Karawang, it was Nabire in Central Papua that was rocked by the earthquake. According to data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), two earthquakes occurred in Nabire at 07:09 and 07:53 WIB (Western Indonesian Times) or 09:09 and 09:53 WIT (Eastern Indonesian Times), with magnitudes of 3.7 and 3.6 respectively.

Having its epicenter on land, 28 kilometers southeast and 11 kilometers northeast of Nabire, it was felt at a II-III MMI scale. This means the earthquake was felt by some people inside their homes and was as noticeable as a passing truck.

Prior to the earthquake in Karawang, BMKG recorded a stronger earthquake felt in Sarmi, Papua. The 5.0 magnitude earthquake in Sarmi struck just after midnight, precisely at 00:22 WIB or 02:22 local time.

With its epicenter on land at a depth of 15 kilometers, the Sarmi earthquake caused tremors felt at a III-IV MMI scale. This means if the earthquake had occurred during the day, the tremors would have been significantly noticeable inside homes, as if a truck were passing by. The earthquake even caused doors and windows to rattle.

Throughout Sunday, BMKG reported three earthquake events that could be felt. They were scattered in Garut, West Java (M2.4); Kuta, Bali (M4.3); and North Minahasa in North Sulawesi (M4.4). The tremors of these earthquakes were weak, ranging from a II to II-III MMI scale.

On Saturday night, tremors from an earthquake were felt at a IV MMI scale in Simeulue, Aceh. The M5.6 earthquake was recorded by BMKG to have occurred at 19:24 WIB.
