TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japan Foundation will once again dispatch individuals from Japan to assist in teaching the Japanese language in Indonesian schools through the NIHONGO Partners program. This program has been running since 2014 and is now entering its 11th year.

Japan Foundation's Publication Officer, Abdul Barry Sutan Pulungan, explained that one aspect of this program involves sending native speakers to high schools to serve as assistant teachers.

"So, in the Japanese language subject that will be taught in those schools, there will be one local teacher and one native Japanese teacher," he said at the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta on Friday, August 22, 2025. Abdul also emphasized that the Japanese individuals will not replace the role of local teachers, but will only assist them.

118 Japanese Teachers Assigned to Indonesia

From 2025 to 2026, a total of 118 Japanese citizens will serve as assistant teachers in high schools across Indonesia. They will be placed in four separate waves of arrivals. "We split this into 4 waves of arrivals, totaling 118 Japanese individuals who will depart," said Abdul.

According to the official website of the Japan Foundation Jakarta, the placement of the NIHONGO Partners includes North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Lampung, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, North Sulawesi, and South Sulawesi. They will serve until March 2026.

Since its launch, the NIHONGO Partners program has dispatched over 3,000 Japanese citizens to various countries in Asia, with 1,000 of them placed in Indonesia.

Expanding the Program to Islamic Schools

In addition to collaborating with the Ministry of Education, the Japan Foundation has also signed a contract with the Ministry of Religious Affairs since 2024 to expand the program to Islamic Senior High Schools (MA). "For MA that have Japanese language learning, we invite the schools to register," said Abdul. The program lasts approximately six months.

Not only does the NIHONGO Partners program bring teachers from Japan, but it also provides an opportunity for Japanese language teachers in Indonesia to attend short courses in Japan. "They will visit language centers in Kansai and Urawa. It is hoped that they will receive training to be implemented in schools," added Abdul.
