TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman stated that Indonesia's decision not to import rice in 2025 has directly influenced the decline in global commodity prices.
"This is because Indonesia used to be a major importer. Suddenly, thanks to the great idea of President Prabowo, we stopped importing, alhamdulillah (praise be to God)," Amran said in a written statement on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.
He claimed that Indonesia contributed to lowering global rice prices from an initial US$650 per ton to US$371 per ton.
Based on development data for 5 percent white rice prices (Free on Board) from several rice-exporting countries, Amran explained, the average price of rice from Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Myanmar in January 2024 ranged from US$622 to US$655 per metric ton.
According to him, the prices of rice from these four countries in the international market subsequently dropped to between US$514 and US$455 per metric ton in the third week of December 2024. Amran asserted that this decline in global rice prices occurred when Indonesia announced the cessation of rice imports for 2025.
Citing another source, Amran stated that the FAO All Rice Price Index (FARPI) indicated a 1.2 percent decrease in rice prices in December 2024, with the index at 119.2 points at that time. He contrasted this by stating the index was 100.9 points in September 2025.
Domestic Production and Surplus Claims
Amran stated that the strengthening of domestic rice production is sufficient to support public consumption.
He highlighted the announcement by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), which predicted that this year's rice production would reach 34.77 million tons. He explained that this figure represents a surplus of 4.15 million tons compared to the 30.62 million tons produced in 2024. "This is the highest increase; our stock is the highest," he said.
According to the minister, the projected rice production from January–December 2025 exceeded the annual national rice consumption based on the 2025 rice balance sheet prepared by Bapanas (National Food Agency).
Amran said the government projected rice consumption in 2025 to be 30.97 million tons. Therefore, he concluded that there is a total surplus of 3.8 million tons between rice production and consumption for the year.
