TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen following Israeli airstrikes on the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, on Sunday, August 24, 2025.
The strikes came in retaliation for missiles launched by the Houthis into Israeli territory. According to Houthi health officials, the attack left six people dead and 67 injured. The group’s Saba news agency later reported a higher toll of six dead and 86 wounded, more than 20 of them in critical condition.
The Israeli military said its targets included a military complex that housed the presidential palace, as well as two power plants and a fuel storage facility. A Houthi health ministry spokesperson, quoted by Al Arabiya, said nearly all the casualties came from these strikes.
Speaking from the Israeli Air Force command center in Tel Aviv after overseeing the operation, Netanyahu vowed to maintain a hard line against any group threatening Israel.
“Whoever attacks us, we will attack him. Whoever plans to attack us, we attack him,” Netanyahu said in a video statement released by his office in Hebrew, cited by AFP via Hindustan Times.
“ I think the entire region is learning Israel’s strength and determination…..The Houthi terrorist regime is learning the hard way that it will pay and is paying a very heavy price for its aggression against Israel.”
Defense Minister Israel Katz also claimed that Israeli forces had destroyed the Houthi presidential palace in Sanaa, in addition to striking oil and power facilities. However, no confirmation has been issued by Yemeni sources.
“The IDF has now destroyed the Houthi presidential palace in Yemen and attacked fuel depots and power and electricity stations,” Katz said.
“We continue to impose an air and naval blockade and are hitting infrastructure targets that are used to promote Houthi terrorism.”
The airstrikes came shortly after the Israeli military accused the Houthis of using cluster bomb warheads in their attacks. Footage from Sanaa showed a massive fireball lighting up the night sky, followed by thick plumes of black smoke.
Despite the destruction, the Houthis signaled no retreat. Senior official Abdul Qader al-Murtada declared that the group would continue its campaign in solidarity with Gaza.
“(Israel) must know that we will not abandon our brothers in Gaza, whatever the sacrifices,” al-Murtada said on X.
