TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Vice President Jusuf Kalla received a visit from the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, at his private residence in South Jakarta on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Hamid Awaluddin, the former Minister of Law and Human Rights, accompanied Jusuf Kalla during the meeting.
The discussion focused on the current situation in Iran and the potential role of Indonesia in facilitating conflict resolution.
Following the meeting, Kalla revealed that Boroujerdi had provided an update on the latest conditions in Iran. The Iranian Ambassador's presentation included the resistance of the Iranian people and the civilian casualties resulting from the joint attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran.
"During the discussion and the visit of the Iranian Ambassador, the latest situation in Iran was presented, along with the resistance of the Iranian people and the victims, mostly civilians such as school children and others," said Jusuf Kalla, as quoted in his official statement.
Jusuf Kalla expressed that Iran hopes for support from the Muslim community, including Indonesia. He stated that, in principle, both the Indonesian government and society support peace efforts.
He also mentioned that President Prabowo Subianto is ready to act as a mediator in the conflict between the U.S.-Israel and Iran if requested. However, Kalla stressed that the possibility of such mediation will be further discussed with the government and all conflicting parties. "President Prabowo is ready to mediate in this conflict. However, the consent of both parties is needed, and this is always being considered by them," he said.
On Saturday, February 28, local time, the U.S. and Israel launched a series of air strikes on Iran, including the capital, Tehran. The attacks resulted in infrastructure damage and the loss of civilian lives.
In response to the conflict, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated Indonesia's readiness to facilitate dialogue. In a written statement on February 28, 2026, it was mentioned that President Prabowo is willing to fly to Tehran if both parties agree to this step.
"If approved by both parties, the Indonesian President is willing to fly to Tehran to mediate," the statement read. The Indonesian government also expressed regret for the renewed armed conflict and urged all parties to prioritize dialogue and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each country.
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Indonesia, through an official release on March 1, 2026, expressed appreciation for the support of the Indonesian government and people and welcomed the readiness of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to mediate. Iran also urged Indonesian officials to take a firmer stance against actions deemed to violate international law and the United Nations Charter.
The statement read, "The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Indonesia, by expressing appreciation for the consistent support of the Indonesian government and people and welcoming the readiness of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to mediate in this conflict, emphasizes the importance of a firm stance by Indonesian officials in condemning the aggression and crimes of the United States and the Zionist regime of Israel."
