TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Archbishop of Jakarta, Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, has confirmed his participation in the papal conclave, the secretive election to choose the next pope after the passing of Pope Francis. The College of Cardinals, including Suharyo, is set to convene in the Sistine Chapel, Vatican, to kickstart the process.
"Yes, I am required to participate in the conclave because I’m one of the cardinals under 80 years old,” Cardinal Suharyo told Tempo on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
At present, Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo is 74 years old.
Suharyo is the only cardinal in Indonesia eligible to attend the conclave, giving him the right to vote and be voted on in the papal election.
The cardinal admitted to forgoing any special preparations for the conclave. "I will just follow the prearranged agenda," he said.
Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo plans to leave for the Vatican on May 3 or 4, as the conclave is set to commence 15 days after the pope’s death.
Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025.
In addition to Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, the official Vatican website mentioned that there are 135 cardinals eligible to elect the next ruler of the Holy See. Meanwhile, the total number of cardinals worldwide is 252.
The conclave will soon be held after Pope Francis passed away last Monday, or one day after Easter. During the Easter moment, the Pope conveyed several messages through an aide, while the Argentinian pontiff briefly appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.
The Pope was previously hospitalized in February 2025 due to bronchitis that developed into double pneumonia. He had previously suffered from pleurisy as a young adult, and part of his lungs had been removed. At that time, the doctors had advised Francis to rest for two months at his residence in the Vatican for recovery.
Before his passing, the doctors recommended that the Pope limit his activities, so he did not lead the Easter Mass in the Vatican. However, he still attended the end of the event to give the Urbi et Orbi blessing, a message of peace to the city and the world.
