TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a weather warning for several Indonesian provinces. Maluku and Papua Pegunungan are on alert for potential heavy rain from August 26–28. During the same period, Lampung, Banten, West Java, and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) have been warned of strong winds.
West Java, Central Java, Central Papua, Papua Pegunungan, and South Papua are advised to be on alert for heavy rain from August 29 to September 1. West Java and NTT will also remain on alert for strong winds during this period.
This weather advisory comes from the latest Weekly Weather Outlook, released by the BMKG's Directorate of Public Meteorology on Monday evening, August 25, 2025. "Rain is still lurking in the dry season; increase your vigilance," the BMKG stated.
According to the BMKG, several regions in Indonesia may experience significant rain cloud formation in the coming week. This condition is triggered by the interaction of atmospheric factors on a global, regional, and local scale.
These conditions are amplified by the influence of cyclonic circulation in the Indian Ocean, located west of Sumatra, and in the Pacific Ocean, north of West Papua. Tropical Cyclone Kajiki in the South China Sea is predicted to move westward toward Vietnam with decreasing intensity, while Cyclone 93W east of the Philippines is expected to persist.
Over the past week, the BMKG recorded very heavy rainfall (100–150 mm per day) to extreme rainfall (more than 150 mm per day) in West Java, North Sulawesi, and Maluku. The highest rainfall was reported in Bitung (166.4 mm per day), Bogor (161.4 mm per day), and Banda Neira (115 mm per day).
