TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries urged Indonesian fishers to suspend their fishing activities as Tropical Cyclone Fina triggers frequent extreme weather at sea.

"It is highly risky at sea, so to prevent accidents, fishers are advised to stay ashore for a while for the sake of safety," said the Director General of Capture Fisheries, Lotharia Latif, in a written statement on Friday, November 21, 2025.

Lotharia said the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning about extreme weather potential, including heavy rain and strong winds causing high waves in the Arafuru Sea.

Extreme weather is expected to continue in the eastern part of Indonesia as Tropical Cyclone Fina continues to lash the region. Lotharia said he requested that harbor masters at fishing ports block sailing if the weather has yet to return to normal.

The ministry, he said, invites all business actors and fishers to continue monitoring the weather conditions. He urges all fishers to up vigilance and prioritize safety while at sea amid the extreme weather.

Lotharia calls for ship owners to ensure social protection for the fishing crew through mandatory employment insurance, as stipulated in Government Regulation Number 27 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.
