TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said he's not worried about U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose 25% additional tariffs on Iran's trading partners.

Indonesia has trade and investment ties with Iran, but Airlangga dismissed Trump's pledge as the trade volume between the two countries is relatively small compared to Iran's other major partners.

"We're not concerned [since] our transactions are insignificant," said Airlangga at the Kadin Tower, Jakarta, on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

Based on data derived from the Ministry of Trade, in 2023, Indonesia-Iran's trade volume amounted to US$ 206.9 million over the past 5 years, down 19.31 percent. Meanwhile, Indonesia's exports to Iran amounted to US$195.1 million, with imports valued at US$11.7 million, meaning a trade surplus of US$183.4 million for Indonesia.

Trump's threat of additional tariffs was announced on his personal social media account yesterday. "Effective immediately, any Country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America. This Order is final and conclusive," the Truth Social post read, as quoted on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

United States Urges Citizens to Leave Iran

Meanwhile, the virtual Embassy of the United States in Iran on Monday, January 12, 2026, warned its citizens to exit Iran immediately, amid the escalating protests across the country that could "turn violent."

"Protests across Iran are escalating and may turn violent, resulting in arrests and injuries. Increased security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions, and internet blockages are ongoing," the warning stated, as cited by NDTV.

The U.S. Embassy also added that the Iranian government has restricted access to mobile, landline, and the national internet networks. The advisory also highlighted travel disruptions, with several airlines having also restricted or canceled flights exiting or entering Iran.
