TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, confirmed that the nation’s football teams will not be burdened with the pressure of winning gold at the upcoming SEA Games 2025 in Thailand.
The All-Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has set a silver medal target for the men’s U-23 team and a bronze for the women’s team.
“Based on our evaluation, PSSI proposed a bronze target for the women’s team and a silver for the men’s team,” Erick said during a press conference in Jakarta on Friday, November 21, 2025.
The minister shared these targets while outlining the expected gold medal contributions from 17 other key sports branches. Among them, archery is projected to win four golds, badminton two, aquatics three, taekwondo one, judo one, and athletics four.
Football’s modest targets stand out, especially considering the men’s team—Garuda Muda—clinched gold at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia. “These are the results communicated to us from the evaluation,” Erick added.
Overall, Indonesia is aiming for 85 gold medals at the SEA Games in Thailand, sending 996 athletes to compete in 48 of the 50 contested sports. The goal is to maintain the country’s third-place finish, as achieved in Cambodia two years ago.
The U-23 men’s team will open their SEA Games campaign against Singapore at the 700th Anniversary Stadium in Chiang Mai on December 5, 2025. They will then face the Philippines on December 8 and conclude the group stage against Myanmar on December 12 at the same venue.
The women’s national team is placed in Group A alongside hosts Thailand, Cambodia, and Singapore. Their first match is against Thailand at IPE Chonburi Stadium on December 4, followed by Cambodia on December 7 and Singapore on December 10.
