TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir has set a target of 85 gold medals for the Indonesian contingent at the SEA Games 2025 in Thailand. This target will be carried by 996 athletes the country is sending to participate in the games.
"If we can win 80-85 gold medals, that's the same as the previous target, which is the third place," said Erick in a press conference in Jakarta on Friday, November 21, 2025.
According to Erick, the initial forecast showed Indonesia targeting 120 gold medals in the SEA Games. But upon review, the projected target is lowered in the range of 80s, a number considered sufficient to maintain Indonesia's position in the top three.
Erick stated that his ministry has conducted a budget review and added an allocation of Rp66 billion to ensure that all the teams' needs are met. "Sending 996 athletes pertains to the requests of each sports branches. That's why I urge all of them to earnestly try to win medals," said the man who also serves as the Chair of the PSSI.
He emphasized that the 2025 SEA Games will be a comprehensive evaluation before mapping the road to the 2028 Olympics. "I ask all participating sports branches to contribute medals, as this is review material," said Erick.
As for the Chef de Mission of the Indonesian Contingent, Bayu Priawan Djokosoetono, he stated that they have visited several national training centers to motivate the athletes, coaches, and sports branch officials. According to Bayu, the athletes have shown high discipline and determination.
"The athletes have trained hard, are disciplined, and focused. This makes us believe they can achieve the best performance," he said.
Bayu invites everyone to provide full support to boost the strength and confidence of the athletes ahead of their departure to Thailand.
