TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Swiss Embassy in Jakarta and the State Electricity Company (PLN) held the Indonesia-Switzerland Hydropower Conference 2025. The event, titled United to Drive Sustainable Growth, was intended as a form of bilateral cooperation between Switzerland and Indonesia in the field of sustainable energy on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

The conference provided a platform for policymakers, industry players, international organizations, and leading academics from both countries to exchange ideas and experiences to promote innovation and investment in Indonesia's energy sector.

"This conference is an extraordinary platform to strengthen cooperation and exchange knowledge between Indonesia and Switzerland in the field of hydropower energy," said the Swiss Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor Leste, and ASEAN, Olivier Zehnder, during the closing of the conference at the PLN headquarters in South Jakarta on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

In addition to PLN, the Swiss Embassy also collaborated with the International Hydropower Association (IHA), the Indonesian Hydropower Association (INAHA), the Hydropower Plant Management Association (APPLTA), and the Indonesia-Swiss KADIN Bilateral Committee.

Karen Atkinson, IHA Vice-Chair, welcomed the cooperation between the two countries, seeing Indonesia's commitment to partnering with Switzerland in the field of energy.

"We are ready to support Indonesia's ambition in developing sustainable hydropower plants, as well as promoting environmentally friendly hydropower growth worldwide," said Atkinson.

The Swiss Embassy referred to their country as a global leader in hydropower development. With about 60 percent of national electricity generated from hydropower, hydropower plants are the country's most important domestic energy source.

Swiss companies have advantages in advanced hydropower technology, such as in developing pumped storage, high-efficiency turbines, smart control systems, environmental monitoring, and smart grid infrastructure.

Switzerland highlights the potential of hydropower plants in Indonesia as a renewable energy source to address carbon emissions. During the event, the two countries discussed various concrete steps to accelerate project development, including policy and regulatory improvements.
