Indonesia, Singapore Ink MoU on 3.5 GW Power Export Deal by 2035

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister, Bahlil Lahadalia, and the Minister of Trade and Industry of Singapore, Tan See Leng, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for electricity export at the Ministry of ESDM office in Central Jakarta on Friday, June 13, 2025. The agreement covers the export of electricity up to 3.5 gigawatts (GW) to Singapore until 2035.

Bahlil mentioned that this cooperation will strengthen Southeast Asia's transition to green energy. "This agreement marks a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two countries in renewable energy. It includes developing carbon capture and storage technology, as well as green industrial areas in the Riau Islands," said Bahlil.

To meet the export target, the government plans to produce solar panels with a capacity of 18.7 GWp. The industrial area to be built in the Riau Islands will be the main source of these panels. "The estimated investment reaches US$10 billion," said Bahlil.

This memorandum of understanding includes developing clean energy industrial areas and carbon trading. Minister Bahlil added that the Indonesian government will only approve export schemes that benefit both parties in a balanced manner, including technology transfer and domestic investment.

Bahlil, who is also the Chairman of the Golkar Party, revealed that this cooperation is a result of the meeting between President Prabowo and Singapore's prime minister. He reminded business actors to be organized in managing energy project permits. "The better organized your regulations are, the faster we can process them. We at the Ministry are ready to work quickly and transparently," he concluded.
